We are deeply saddened to report that Laura Holdenwhite died at her home in Huntington Beach in early January after a long illness. Laura was the Office Coordinator for the Amigos from 2007 until the middle of 2014 when she left to spend more time with her family and her other interests: Habitat for Humanity, the Library Literacy Tutoring program, the HB Community Garden, and the construction (with her husband Jim) of a vacation home on a large wooded lot in the New Mexico mountains.
As a well-organized, efficient and independent worker during the years, “Laura managed to arrange each year up to 60 private wetland tours for school or adult groups and to keep the Board members up to date on Amigos’ events. Without her dedication we wouldn’t be able to have the excellent docent tour program that Amigos has maintained for more than 30 years.” (quote from Dave Carlberg, Summer 2010 Tern Tide)
During each of her seven years’ service, in addition to managing tour programs, Laura assisted with arranging materials for and the scheduling of Amigos’ participation in numerous events including Earth Day, Beach Cleanup, and the Dana Point Whale Festival, presentations, public meetings, the annual fundraiser luncheon, and the summer picnic. In 2012 and 2013 she was the pumpkin order administrator, succulent propagating manager, and one of 12 decorators for the Amigos’ decorated pumpkin fund raising operations. She was an excellent record-keeper and problem-solver. The Membership Committee greatly benefitted from her digitizing the ABC records from the card file.
Having worked with the 40 or so Naturalists and arranging the details for their tours and not satisfied with working behind the scenes, in 2010 Laura took the Naturalist class herself and thereafter was qualified to fill in on tours and booth activities when needed. Needless to say, Laura made an enormous contribution in so many ways to the success of the Amigos during her years of service. She will be profoundly missed.
