2016 Volunteer of the Year
By Shirley Dettloff & Jennifer Robins

In recognition of the work done by volunteers, especially during our 40th Anniversary year, the Board of Directors held an event to highlight and to recognize our volunteers. On Wednesday, November 16, we met at Don Ramon's Mexican Restaurant which has been in our community for almost as long as the Amigos. Chuck Drescher was chosen Volunteer of the Year and was given his award from Jerry Donohue, President of Amigos de Bolsa Chica. Chuck is a long-time volunteer who always does what needs to be done and is always ready to say "yes" to any project that he is asked to do. He represents the success of the volunteers at Bolsa Chica.

Chuck Drescher has been a member of Amigos and a docent for over 20 years. He has served on the Amigos board as a director and volunteers for wetlands tours, especially with college students and adults, and at our Saturday Public Tour. His enthusiasm in sharing his knowledge of ecology and history is a highlight. He also became a Citizen Scientist with Amigos' FLOW program and helps with the school visits. He has volunteered for all the booth events Amigos has sponsored throughout the years: Earth Day, Los Angeles Arboretum, Golden West and Orange Coast College's Science Nights, Muzeo Museum. Amigos used to rid the Tern Islands of vegetation in preparation for arrival of the Terns and Chuck always helped with these cleanups. He has an enthusiasm while talking to visitors to the wetlands about the importance of conservation and environmental causes that inspires activism to his listeners.
