Snowbird Docents and Citizen Scientists
By Jennifer Robins
Amigos de Bolsa Chica is fortunate to have two new docents who spend half the year in Huntington Beach. Nancy Curtis and Bill Stern became docents in 2014 and 2016 respectively and immediately started leading Wetland tours with students and at the first Saturday Public Tour. They are now citizen scientists in the FLOW program and active with the FLOW education programs.
After attending the docent class, Bill Stern has taken an active role in many Amigos activities. You can see him talking about Endangered Species on our Public Tours. He can also be seen rinsing nets, working the projecting microscope and helping with our school groups coming to FLOW. Bill currently serves on our Board of Directors as well. Besides helping Amigos, Bill also attends meetings sponsored by the Newport Bay Conservancy and Sea and Sage Audubon.
When living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Bill volunteers with Bridging, a large furniture and appliance redistribution network that attempts to provide needed residential items to individuals in transition, especially focusing on the homeless. For the past 10 years, Bill has checked battery powered and corded electrical appliances to make sure they are safe. As Minneapolis is the corporate headquarters for Select Comfort, he often transports newly returned mattresses to needy families. Bill and his wife Meredyth, a former master gardener, both enjoy hiking, biking and walking around Southern California.
Nancy Curtis and her husband spend the other half of their year in Boston, Massachusetts. Nancy has also helped at our community event booths using educational displays to teach the public about wetlands and the birds. She has a BS in Pre-Veterinary medicine from the University of Connecticut and worked in HIV and immunology research at Yale and Brown University as a research assistant before returning for a second BS degree in Physical Therapy at UConn. She worked at Massachusetts Hospitals as a neurological and orthopedic out-patient physical therapist for 25 years and was the Clinical Coordinator for Student Physical Therapists for eight years. She took a hiatus from working and with her husband decided to spend the winters in Huntington Beach four years ago. She loves outdoor sports including water sports, swimming, sailing, and windsurfing. Nancy says "With my background and an appreciation for science, nature and the environment, I am happy to volunteer with a great organization like the Amigos de Bolsa Chica. The Amigos de Bolsa Chica provide many exciting learning opportunities, as well as participation in community and environmental programs."
Amigos de Bolsa Chica thanks both of you for your continued service to our organization.
